35 odd-schools – a sampling in Bangalore

I compiled a list of over 35 schools I know of cause we considered it as an option for our daughter, or I’ve heard it mentioned because a friend’s child goes there, or I’ve seen the school bus on the road or I somehow just know of it.

Feel free to share the list with a friend or acquaintance that’s considering moving back to Bangalore from your neck of the woods.

Most of these are listed at: http://www.koramangala.com/guide/school.htm
ASIDE: There is a Bethany High School on this list and I was reminded of Bethany Elementary – the public school in my neighborhood that my daughter attended for 5 whole years!

I also found http://www.educationbangalore.com/pages/1_list_upto10/icse.htm which is a list of all recognized ICSE schools in Bangalore.

Another listing of schools in Karnataka - http://www.kannada.com/general/educat/schools.html
and Best Indian Schools : http://www.indiaatbest.com/edu_best_sc.htm
(See if the school you went to in India is on this list J )

Here’s my list of 36 schools in Bangalore:

1. Baldwin's Boys & Girls High School (separate for boys and girls) on Hosur Road – quite in the heart of the city. A friend who moved from Portland considered it for her then 6 year old son who went to a Montessori school near their house at first. Class sizes are large she said – about 55 children! Balwin’s is an OLD school, referred to earlier as the Episcopal Methodist School. Baldwin Boys' High School was established in 1880, by a grant of money from the Hon'ble John Baldwin, from the U.S.A., and was founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church. See the beautiful buildings they have: http://www.children-of-bangalore.com/baldwin.htm. I found an interesting link to “Bangalore in 1920’s” off of this school site! See: http://www.children-of-bangalore.com/1920.htm

2. Bangalore International Public School – sounds so much like TISB (The International School Bangalore), but it’s different one near Uttarahalli. My daughter took some art classes the year after we came back (2005). The teacher lived on Airport Road in Whitefield and she worked at this school. Her commute was from one end of the city to another – over 30 km one way!

3. Bethany High in Koramangala: My daughter went to our neighborhood elementary public school with same name near our home in Portland.

4. Bishop Cottons School – I had heard about it when I was growing up. A good school I think. Their website: http://www.bishopcottons.com/ says that they are adjudged the best school in Bangalore (by whom I’m not sure?) and shows pictures of celebrities who are alumni’s which includes Dr. Raja RamannaEminent scientist & Former chairman of Atomic Energy Commission, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, India's Wealthiest Woman, Chief of Biocon!! And Nandan Nilekani of Infosys fame. The site also has an interesting group school photo taken in 1945! It links to the website for the boys and girls school which look so awesome! I know of one niece (cousin’s daughter) that went to this school.

5. Brigade School in JP Nagar 7th phase – a stones throw away from where we live. So, my daughter has the luxury of walking safely to school along a small private road. The Brigade Millennium School provides holistic and progressive education to its students, with emphasis on academics, sports and the arts. My daughter is happy here and that’s a good thing. See: http://www.brigadeschools.org/

6. Carmel School – maybe attached to Mt. Carmel College. Good school, I was told by a close family friend whose grand daughter went there and is now in college. They have branches all over town. I see many of their school buses ply.

7. Christ School – I saw the school bus, don’t know much about it. I have heard of Christ College which supports lots of extra curricular activities. A nephew graduated from Christ’s college, a neice studies there and my daughter’s French teacher who moved to Bangalore from Mauritius graduated from Christ’s college with a degree on Psychology.

8. Cluny Convent – a renowned half-century old institution in Malleswaram: http://www.clunymalleswaram.com/ …For the past half century and more, Cluny Convent High School in Bangalore has been striving hard to make Anne Marie’s vision a reality by educating all those entrusted to her not only in academics but also in human and spiritual values. I know of many people who are alumnies.

9. Deccan International School – this is close to my aunt’s house in Uttarahalli. We drive past it often. I have seen the compound wall. Can’t believe there is a sprawling ten acres school campus inside that dusty road entrance in Padmanabnagar. My husband visited the place on his preview trip. School was founded in the year 2003 and managed by Deccan Herald-Prajavani group. See: http://snsvo8.seekandsource.com/deccan/

10. Delhi Public School Bangalore – it’s funny how the school holds the name of the capital and is located in Bangalore. It’s a popular school here – many of their buses ply the streets of Bangalore city. There are lots of branches all over town. A couple of my daughter’s close friends go to Delhi Public. See : http://efp.poznan.pl/school/delhi_public_school_bangalore.html

11. GEAR Innovative International School – a friend who moved from Portland had her son and daughter going to this school. 2 of my daughter’s close friends go to GEAR. They moved from Chicago same time we moved from Portland. They have adjusted very well and like the school. There are several other kids from the flats we lived in before, who go to this school. GEAR has also introduced a PUC (Pre-University College) program. See: http://www.gear-ed-village.in/

12. India International School – This is located a block away from the Intel campus where I used to work, on Outer Ring Road. I saw the building, the gate and the huge bill-boards picture of Vivekananda that is posted in front. I saw their buses every day too. One of our nephew’s was even considering this school for his now 5 year old daughter. But they moved out of Bangalore and the school also moved from Outer Ring Road to another locale. I had heard of a few folks at Intel who send their kids there but don’t have any first hand info. on the curriculum or anything about the school.

13. Innisfree House School – JP Nagar. I board my auto to work everyday from the entrance to this school. It's wonderful to see all the lively children each morn!

14. Jain International Residential school – far away on Kanakapura Road - Jain Jakkasandra Post, Kanakapura Taluk, Bangalore (Rural) District,Karnataka - 562 112, Tel: (080) 756 2828 – 32. Not sure IF they have day scholars. I doubt it. With a name such as their, it’s not a surprise that they serve only strict vegetarian meals all the time. See: http://www.jirs.ac.in/

15. Jain School & College too - They say Jain schools are quite relaxed and stress free. A nephew’s wife attended a Jain school in Chennai and is very happy with her educational experience. A friend’s child went to a Jain school in Bangalore, was happy with it but moved after they shifted their home. A niece attended Jain College in Visveshpuram area in Bangalore and was very happy with her Pre-University college experience.

16. Kumaran’s Childrens Home in Konenakunte - Kanakapra Road. A very good and sought after school . http://www.kumarans.org/. Sri Kumaran Public School – has several branches. One of them is located at: Tata Silk Farm, Basavanagudi, Bangalore 560 004. Phone: 6673191 A neice and a nephew graduated from this school. Another nephew is attending elementary school here; It’s called Sri Kumaran’s children’s home and I see some tiny tots from my flats get into this school bus each morning. Just yesterday I attended a wedding of a friend and his wife is a Kumaran’s school graduate. I saw the principal Mrs. Deepa Sridhar at he wedding and her mother too. The school was started by Deepa’s grandmother – so 3 generations of women have been running this school very successfully in this city.

17. Mallya Aditi International School – Seems like a good school. It’s located in Yelahanka, Bangalore 560 064. Phone: 8462508. It was showcased in Newsweek on June 19, 2007: http://www.newsweekshowcase.com/international-schools-india/mallya-aditi-int-school.php

18. NAFL – National Academy for Learning. Heard good things about this school. TISB is also a unit of the Bangalore based National Academy for Learning (NAFL) founded by the visionary educationist Dr. Gopalakrishna. NAFL is in Basaveshwaranagar. A couple of 11th grade girls at
TISB that we had met once, moved from to TISB from here. My co-sister visited NAFL when we were considering a school for or daughter before moving and she said it was good. I read just quite the opposite review on the web regarding this school though.

19. Namma Shaale – meaning “Our school” in Kannada. Have not been able to find more info. on this but I’m sure a more dedicated web search will.

20. New Horizon Public School – I just saw a school bus once. It’s located on the 100 feet Road, HAL 2nd Stage, Indira Nagar, Bangalore 560 008. Know nothing more about this school.

21. NPS – National Public School – they have branches in Indiranagar and Koramangala. Have a great reputation. Admission forms get over in 2 hours from when admissions open! It’s crazy. NPS was started by Mr. Gopalkrishna, Founder of TISB. I know of 3 families from the US (2 from Portland) whose kids go to this school. See: The Wikipedia link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Public_School,_Indiranagar
Nursery School is at : 446, 8th Main, 4th Block, Koramangala, Bangalore 560034. Phone: 91-80-552 3473 See: http://www.alternativeeducationindia.net/altschools.htm

22. Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan – Learning Leadership Academy (PSBB LLA) - http://www.psbbacademy.org/ They are rated as one of the top 5 school in India (on their website). The school is quite popular in Chennai. In Bangalore, as I described in “Brigade School” listing, they started as partnership. The alliance of the “builder of buildings” and “builder of schools” was rather short lived. Within a year they were separated. The Brigade School (the first school to be set up by the Brigade Foundation in Bangalore) was established in association with the Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan (PSBB) institution of Chennai. PSBB was rated one of the 10 best schools in the country, in a survey by Outlook magazine. Padma Seshadri, founded in 1958, has two branches in Chennai with a student strength of about 7,000. PSBB is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi.

23. Prakriya Green Wisdom School – Yet another “alternate” school. It’s part of the Krishnamurthy Foundation schools. A friend who moved from Portland just moved his children here from The Valley School. Main School Campus is located at NO. 70, Chikkanayakanahalli Road, off Doddakannelli, Sarjapur Road, Bangalore-560035. (about 7 km from HSR Layout and close to Intel SRR1 campus.) Phone: 91-80-844 0925, 333 3001 E-mail: teachers@prakriyaschool.org.

24. Ryan International School - heard it is good, I see school buses ply on the roads, crisscrossing my path during my daily commute to work.

25. Sarala Birla Academy - Incubating leaders they say! I know of one student who wants to move here from TISB. Also have the IB program. It’s a brand new school inaugurated by Mr. Narayana Murthy of Infosys just this June 11th 2004. See: http://www.saralabirlaacademy.org/

26. Shishugraha – just got the name; Have no more info.

27. Sophia School - A friend who moved back from Portland has her 2 kids going here. It’s the school she and her siblings went to. So, her kids have a lot of personal history with this school, which itself is loaded with history (interesting info. from the web) - A small Montessori Nursery class with 17 children and one qualified teacher (Miss. Meena), was started in January 1949 at the White Bungalow, the strength gradually grew to 59 by the end of June 1948. The tuition fees were then Rs.10/-, admission fee was Rs.10/-, and the charges for elevances ( biscuits and a cup of milk) was also Rs.10/- It is hard at this stage to picture the class rooms, but one should consider a large Manor with large drawing rooms, large windows, filled with little benches. Infant "A", "B", and "C" were conducted from the parlour of the building. About 40% of the children admitted were foreigners. See: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/2960/sophia.htm

28. Sri Aurobindo Memorial School - have not gone out to gather more info. about this. I know a family in our flats has a son going to this school and they seem to be aligned with it’s philosophy and are loving it.

29. St. Theresa's convent – My mom went to this school! See: http://www.alumni.net/Asia/India/Karnataka/Bangalore_-_Urban/Saint_Teresas_Girls_High_School/

30. The Canadian School International School – I heard that it’s the most expensive school in Bangalore. They offer two curriculum tracks : The International Baccalaureate (www.ibo.org) and the Ontario (Canada) Curriculum (www.edu.gov.on.ca ) See: http://www.canschoolindia.org/

31. The Frank Anthony Public School! – the name rang a bell my friends, citizens and countrymen J So, I just listed it here. Located on Cambridge Road, Ulsoor, Bangalore 560 008. Phone: 5570970 , I know nothing about this school nor have I heard about it.

32. The International School Bangalore (TISB) – My daughter went there when we first moved. kids of 8-10 friends and colleage’s children are here still. See: www.tisb.org

33. The Valley School – This is truly an "alternate" school. I know that 2 friends who moved from Portland send their children to this school. It’s based on J. Krishnamurthy Philosophy. They have a vast campus, little focus on exams and a wonderful creative arts program. I really like the Philosophy but implementation in it’s purest form is always a challenge. The school has branches all over India and in other countries including the US. The first residential school was the Rishi Valley School is in Madanapalli, Andhra Pradesh. See: http://www.kfionline.org/2_valleyschool.asp to know more about the school. Read about J. Krishnamurthy at: http://www.kfionline.org/j_krishnamurti.asp and his philosophy and belief … “Refusing to play the role of a guru himself, he urged his listeners to inquire on their own and be a light unto themselves.” The school is located at: Haridvanam, Thatguni Post, 17th km, Kanakapura Main Raod, Bangalore – 560 062, India. Tel: Office: (080) 8435240/8435241/8435030 email: thevalleyschool@vsnl.com, thevalleyschool@tatanova.com

34. Vani School – a neighborhood school in the Northern part of town (Rajajinagar), that two nieces were going to. It was OK but they moved to another more popular and well known school now, called Vidhya Vardhaka.

35. Vidhya Shilp – a friend’s friend’s son goes to this school. Another boy left this school and is in Maya’s class at TISB. I think another friend’s son who moved from Portland, went here first and is now in NPS.

36. Vidhya Vardhaka - this school has many branches all over Bangalore. It’s quite popular and they get many state ranks. Looks like their students also do well in several extra-curricular activities and competitions. Two of Renganathan’s nieces go to this school and they have progressed extremely well, academically.
